The Soldier in the Attic
Herien Wensink &
‘My life is for my country, my love is for you.’
As a young girl, Herien Wensink fell in love with a photograph. This photo depicted a handsome American soldier, and Wensink found it in the attic in her family home. The young man turned out to be Stephen Ralph Mullins, who perished in Vietnam at a young age. The portrait was a gift for her mother, his great love. In The Soldier in the Attic, Wensink goes searching for Steve in letters, archives and the mountains of West Virginia. A journey through late eighties Hilversum, via West Virginia in the sixties to Vietnam, ending up in present-day America.
