Diederik Oostdijk is professor of English and American literature at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, and is specialized in American poetry and the cultural memory of World War II. He wrote two books in English: Among the Nightmare Fighters: American Poets of World War II (2011), published by the University of South Carolina Press and Bells for America: The Cold War, Modernism and the Netherlands Carillon in Arlington (2019), which was published by Pennylvania State University Press, and republished by Amsterdam University Press in 2020 with a new epilogue. Oostdijk adapted that book into a shorter, Dutch-language book Klokken voor Amerika: Weerklank van de bevrijding (2020) published by Boom Publishers. This book was the inspiration for an exhibit at Museum Klok & Peel (2020-2022) and for a special of the NTR/VPRO television program Andere Tijden in which Oostdijk featured as the main narrator.
